Obituary

Alva Albert "Sonny" Myers Jr., 89, of Columbia City, went to be with his Lord and Savior at 4:16 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne.

He was born February 8, 1935 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, a son of the late Alva A. Myers Sr., and Loretta B. (Green) Myers.  His formative years were spent in the Fort Wayne area. He attended Anthony Green Elementary School and Elmhurst High School.

He was united in marriage October 3, 1953 to Joan Grabner, who died October 6, 1995.  On February 7, 1998, he married Darlene Busz. They made their home in Columbia City.  Darlene died October 7, 2019.

Sonny started his work career in manufacturing at Wayne Candies.  After 21 years he moved to East Allen County Schools as a Head Custodian for over 20 years before his retirement in 1997.

Sonny loved serving his Lord since he was 24, he loved his music and praising the Lord. He was an elder of New Haven Church of Christ and used his music ministry to praise the Lord at churches, nursing homes and hospitals.  He also enjoyed travelling.

He attended the Sugar Grove Church of God.

He is survived by daughters Linda L. Screeton of Fort Wayne and Susan M. (Mark) Haudenschild of Columbia City; step-sons, Mark (Kathy) Busz of Warsaw and Max (Lisa) Busz of Pierceton; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother, Ronald (Darlene) Myers of New Haven and sister, Pauline Geisleman of Huntington.

Additionally, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Vicki Thompson; step-daughter, Mary Ann Gable; granddaughter, Shannon Noel; grandson; Mark Haudenschild II; and sisters Mary Ellen Cartwright and Helen Bell.

The funeral service is 11 a.m. Thursday, May 2, 2024 at Sugar Grove Church of God, 5019 E. 500 S-57, Churubusco, with visitation one hour before. Burial is at the IOOF Cemetery in New Haven. Visitation is from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 1, 2024 at the Church.

Preferred memorials are to St. Jude Children's Hospital or Woodburn Christian Children's home.
