Dorothy Dolores Burton , 86, of Columbia City, died peacefully surrounded by family at 9:56 a.m. Saturday, March 9, 2024, at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City.

Born on September 17, 1937, in Whitley County, Indiana, she was a daughter of the late Marshall and Nellie (Engle) Sheckler. Growing up on a farm in Thorncreek, Twp., she graduated from Columbia City High School in 1955.

On May 12, 1956, she married William V. Burton, beginning their 60-year life together and raising six children. They made their home in Columbia City for 30 years, then moved to Ligonier. William died on July 19, 2016.

Dorothy was a full-time homemaker raising the couple's children.

She enjoyed gardening both flowers and vegetables. Through the years, she liked to quilt, fish, and hunt mushrooms in the spring. In her senior years, she was a regular walker on the Blue River Trail, assembled jigsaw puzzles, and, in her quiet time, read books of all genres. Spending time with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren was always a delight.

Surviving are her children, Sandra K. Nichols of Columbia City, William A. (Cheryl) Burton of South Whitley, Peggy S. Houser of Albion, Carol A. Boggess of Wolf Lake, Barbara (Larry) Smith of Columbia City, and Janet L. (Paul) Stephens of Pierceton; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren and a sister, Joyce (John) Burton of Columbia City.

Additionally, she was preceded in death by brothers Robert and Max Sheckler and a sister, Betty Hill.

Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. Burial will be at a later date at the Stough Cemetery, Columbia City.
