Emily Vada Deutsch, 80, of Columbia City, died at 2:21 p.m. Monday, December 14, 2020, at Parkview Randallia, Fort Wayne.

She was born May 27, 1940, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, a daughter of the late Orville O. and Bessie Margaret (Hornaday) Carpenter, Sr. She lived in South Whitley and Tunker until age eight when she moved to New Castle with her sister, Margaret and husband Bob Smith. Completing grade school and middle school in New Castle, Emily moved back to Columbia City with her mother and brothers Rex and Randall, where she graduated from Columbia City High School in 1958. She continued her education at Franklin College in Franklin, IN.

On August 2, 1959, she married Gary D. Deutsch. They have made their home in rural Columbia City until 1986, when her husband transferred to Springfield, OH, with International Harvester. In 1989, the couple returned to their rural Columbia City home. Gary died on April 21, 2020.

In addition to raising five children, she started and operated Deutsch's Boarding Kennel. Passionate about animals, she worked with Fran Parker of Parker's Poodle Parlor and formed Tina's Dog and Cat Show, raising funds for St Jude's Children's Hospital. The couple was so successful they met Danny Thomas, the national spokesperson for St. Jude's. She had also worked with the American Cancer Society as a local secretary. Using her fundraising skills, she led the campaign in 1997, along with Dr. Richey, to form and build the Whitley County Humane Society. She served as the board chair until 2003.

During her time in Springfield, she worked in sales and consulting for the funeral home and cemetery industry. After returning to Columbia City, she worked as a receptionist for her brother's medical practice, Dr. Randall Carpenter, until 1995.

A meticulous recordkeeper, she maintained a daily journal and impeccable scrapbooks. Making and selling dolls, she made them in all sizes. She was a member of the Oak Grove Church of God and Delta Theta Tau.

Surviving are her children, Bradley D. (Trudy) Deutsch, W. Todd (Debbie) Deutsch, Julie (Mark) Rethlake, all of Columbia City, Deborah Rice (Jeff) Scheeler of Kendallville and Steve (Robbin) Rice of Fort Wayne; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Rex (Fayette) Carpenter and Dr. Randall (Carolyn) Carpenter, both of Florida.

Additionally, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Hewitt, Orville O. Jr., Courtland, Walter, and Hollis Carpenter; and two sisters, Mary Carpenter and Margaret Murray.

A private family service will be held at Smith and Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. Burial will take place at a later date at the Oak Grove Cemetery.
