Obituary

Emma June Niccum , 97, of Columbia City, died peacefully in the company of her daughter at 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, June 9, 2024, at Oak Pointe, Columbia City.

Born in Pike County, Indiana, on May 13, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Foster and Cecil (White) Logan.  Growing up in near Evansville, she graduated from Otwell Noble High School in 1945.  She continued her education at Deaconess Hospital becoming a Registered Nurse in 1948.  In 1981, she earned a Bachelor's of Nursing from Arizona State University.

On September 25, 1948, she married Dr. Warren L. Niccum. They made their first home in Muncie, moving to North Carolina, Virginia, and Iowa before her husband established his pediatric practice in Columbia City in 1952. The couple raised four daughters. In 1974, they moved to Phoenix, Arizona. Warren died on April 12, 2005.

In addition to raising their daughters, June worked part-time as a nurse. After earning her bachelor's, she became the County Health Nurse for Maricopa County, Arizona, for about 10 years. Her duties included providing medical care to the county's underprivileged.

In 2008, she moved back to Columbia City to be closer to her family.  She was a member of the Columbia City United Methodist Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Colonel de la Balme chapter, and Friends of the Peabody Public Library.  She enjoyed playing bridge with the local women's club.

Surviving are her daughters, Janice (Paul) Kroekel of Scottsdale, AZ, Phyllis (Dean) Browning of Vancouver, WA, Barbara (Patrick) Kyler of Columbia City, and Laura (Bryan) Zeigler of Leesburg; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Additionally, she was preceded in death by a sister, Jacqueline Schuerger.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday (June 13th) at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City, with visitation from 2 p.m. until the service.

Memorials in June's honor are to Parkview Home Health and Hospice or the Peabody Public Library.
