Gary Lee Smith, 73, of Columbia City, passed away at 11:38 p.m. Monday, June 24, 2024, at The Waters, Columbia City, where he had been a resident since March 2015.

Born on Christmas Day – December 25, 1950 in Allen County, Indiana, he was a son of the late Lloyd and Annabelle (Borne) Smith.  Growing up in Thorncreek Twp., he completed Thorncreek School and graduated from Columbia City Joint High School in 1969.

In 1969, he married Jeannie Pequignot.  The couple had two children and later divorced.  Jeannie preceded Gary in death.

A Columbia City resident, Gary was a professional truck driver, driving for Arizona Environmental, D-Bar Trucking and Devoe Dump Trucks.  He retired from trucking in 2014.

A competitive athlete, he loved playing softball and coaching women's softball.  He also enjoyed playing golf and hosting parties with friends at his home.

He leaves behind his daughter, Trina McConnell of Columbia City; grandchildren, Emma & Alicia Smith; four great grandchildren, and brothers, Kenneth (Cathy) Smith of Goshen and Duane (Dianna) Smith of Columbia City.

Additionally, he was preceded in death by a son, Curt Smith.

Gary desired no services. The arrangements are in the care of Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.
