Jo Ellen Maley , 69, of Columbia City, Indiana, passed away tragically on June 27, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to her family.

Born on September 30, 1955, to Donald and Phyllis Mullett, Jo Ellen lived a life full of compassion, joy, and spirited determination. On July 27, 1973, she married Charles Maley and she was faithfully married to him for nearly 51 years.

Jo Ellen was a proud and loving mother to Tonya (David) Swenson, Bryan (Torri) Maley, and Bethany (Dane) Doremus. Her heart expanded even more with the arrival of her beloved grandchildren: Braiden (Ella)Maley, Camden (Charlotte) Maley, Aubrey Maley (fiancé Jordan Quimby—wedding in 2026), Annika Swenson (fiancé Kameron Eiler—wedding August 30,2025) McKinley(Breyden)Kirkdorffer, Stella Miller, Alex Maley, and Roxy Maley. Her joy was made complete with the addition of her great-granddaughters, Hazel and Harper Maley and a great grandson on the way.

In the early years of motherhood, Jo Ellen chose to stay home to raise her children and babysit, pouring her heart into creating a loving and supportive home. Once Bryan and Tonya were old enough to stay home on their own, she returned to school with determination and earned her RN degree—a testament to her strong will and passion for helping others.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Phyllis Mullett, and her older brother, Dean Mullett. Jo Ellen is survived by her sister Linda (Don) Leighty and  sister in law, Judy Mullett, along with many nieces and nephews who held a special place in her heart

A dedicated caregiver and leader, Jo Ellen worked at Miller's Merry Manor for over 40 years, retiring in 2017. During her time there, she served in many roles—including CNA, In-Service Director, MDS Coordinator, ADON, and DON. Her coworkers and patients alike knew her for her infectious laugh, warm heart, and sometimes wild sense of humor. She was affectionately known by many as "Jo Momma," a name that captured both her nurturing spirit and her fun-loving nature.

After retirement, Jo Ellen and Charles embraced the freedom of the open road, spending their time traveling full-time in their motorhome. It was the perfect life for someone who loved exploring, meeting new people, and creating memories with those she loved most.

Jo Ellen had a way of lighting up every room she entered. She was the kind of person who would do anything for her kids and grandkids—they were her whole world. Her strength, humor, and unconditional love leave an indelible mark on all who had the privilege to know her.

She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched.

A celebration of Jo Ellen's life will be held on Saturday July 5th with visitation from 10 a.m. until Noon with a memorial service at Noon at the Refuge Church, 4975 W. 1000 S. in South Whitley.  In the spirit of her memory, the family encourages everyone to share stories, laugh loudly, and hold their loved ones close—just as Jo Momma would have wanted.
