Obituary

Joan W. Myers , 93, formerly of Larwill, died peacefully in the company of family at 11:05 a.m. Saturday, December 2, 2023, at Lutheran Kosciusko Hospital in Warsaw.

Born on October 22, 1930, at Luckey Hospital in Wolf Lake, she was a daughter of the late Lester and Leone (Magee) Werstler. Growing up on a farm near Larwill, she completed Troy Center School and graduated from Larwill High School in 1948

On August 15, 1948, she married Garland Myers. They made their home in the Larwill – Pierceton area until purchasing a farm in Etna-Troy Twp., Whitley County, in 1970. Garland died on July 11, 1989. Recently, Joan had moved to Warsaw.

A farm wife raising five children, she maintained the home and did farm chores. From 1948 until 1953, she worked as an operator for United Telephone in Warsaw. In 1970, she went to work for Whitley County Consolidated Schools as a bus driver.  She retired in 2009 with 39 years of service, making her one of the longest-serving drivers.

She was a ten-year 4H member, participated in the Sunshine Committee, and, more recently, a member of the Red Hat Society.

Fond of children, she enjoyed her grandkids and all the students who rode her bus through the years. She liked to sew mostly clothing but also did crochet. She is remembered as a great baker, making delicious pies and cookies and teaching her grandkids how to clean fish. In her senior years, she enjoyed reading, and assembling jigsaw puzzles.

Surviving are her children, Galen Myers of Larwill, Glenn Myers of Churubusco and Lester Myers of Larwill; grandchildren, Ryan Myers of Larwill, Joann (Nathan) Huffer of Warsaw, Vester (Jill) Damron of Larwill, Trenton (Mary) Myers of WV, and Stephanie Damron of Columbia City; 13 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Isabel Ruckman of Larwill and Lola Drudge of Warsaw.

Additionally, she was preceded in death by a son, Duane Myers, a daughter, Rebecca Damron, and brothers, Ivan and John "Buster" Werstler.

The funeral service is at 1 p.m. Saturday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. Burial is beside her husband at the Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Larwill. Visitation is from 2 to 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
