John Gilbert Myers, of Columbia City, passed away at 6:55 a.m. on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at Greystone Health and Rehabilitation, Fort Wayne.
Born on February 1, 1933, in Huntington, he was the son of the late John W. Myers and Mary M. (Holzinger) Myers. He grew up in Huntington and graduated from Huntington High School in 1950.
After graduating, he joined the Indiana National Guard for two years, and then joined the U.S. Army in 1952; the same year, he married his first wife, Frances I. Beedy. He would serve as a Battalion Supply Sergeant during his time in Korea, receiving technical training as a Unit Supply Specialist. He was honorably discharged on February 4, 1955. For his commitment and dedication, he was the recipient of an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. in 2017.
After his service, John would continue to work with that same dedication. He was self-employed at Bucks Standard Service Station in Huntington before taking on work as an Outside Salesman for Economy Auto Parts for over a decade. After that, he would work for General Cigar Co for over two decades, becoming a Territory Sales Manager.
In 2004, John's first wife passed away on November 4th. On May 23, 2007, he married Phyllis A. Koser. They made their home in Columbia City. John was a dedicated member of St. John Lutheran Church. He is remembered for his love of and kindness toward animals, and fondness for dancing with his wife, Phyllis. He was also an avid bowler and received numerous awards, being the Indiana State Super Seniors Champion in 2008 and winning second place at the International Bowling Championship in Reno, NV, in 2009. Phyllis would pass away on January 18, 2017.
John is survived by his daughter, Deborah S. Tobin of Huntington; three grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; his brother, Richard A. (Cinda) Myers of Kentucky; and a niece and caretaker, Anita (John) Snyder of Fort Wayne.
He is preceded in death by his sons, Michael and Garry Myers, a grandson, Nicholas Myers, and his sisters, Helen Worster, and Lulabelle Garrett
The funeral service is 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 7th at Smith & Son's Funeral Home in Columbia City. Burial is at the South Park Annex Cemetery. Visitation is from 12:00 noon until the service on Saturday at the funeral home.
Memorials in John's honor are to the American Legion Post 98, Columbia City.
