Obituary

Karl W. "Mick" McOmber, 75, of Columbia City, died at 5:10 p.m. Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at Parkview Randallia.

Born on December 22, 1946, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, he was a son of the late Karl W. and Gloria Belle (May) McOmber Jr.  Growing up in Fort Wayne, he graduated from Elmhurst High School.  He continued his education at Purdue University gaining an Associate Degree in Architectural Technology.

On May 19, 1966 he was inducted into the U.S. Army serving in Vietnam. On May 30, 1967 he was wounded in action and was honorably retired by reason of physical disability, earning a Purple Heart.

On February 15, 1969, he married Mary E. Hershberger. They made their home in the Columbia City area.

Mick was the owner of an antique restoration company known as McOmber's Woods.

He enjoyed target shooting, gun reloading, and television especially the History and Discovery channels.

Surviving is his loving wife, Mary; daughters, Holly D. Sherman of Columbia City and Wendy K. (Chuck) Rasche of Jasper and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Gary McOmber; grandson, Elliott Rasche and a son-in-law, John C. Sherman.

The funeral service is 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. Burial is at the Lindenwood Cemetery with the Whitley County Korean War Veterans Honor Guard presenting honors. Visitation is 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are to the Veterans National Memorial Shrine and Museums, Christ Community Church in Churubusco or the church of your choice.
