Obituary

Laura Lee Byers, 74, of Columbia City, passed away at 11:40 p.m. on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at Majestic Care West Allen, Fort Wayne.

Born on January 31, 1952, in Columbia City, Indiana, she was a daughter of the late James H. and Jeanette (Chapman) Myers. She grew up in Columbia City and graduated from Columbia City Joint High School in 1970.

After graduating, Laura made her home in Columbia City, where she raised two children.

She began her work career at the former Scott’s Grocery in Columbia City in the bakery department. She then worked for Precision Plastics before spending over a decade with Dana Corporation on U.S. 30 in Columbia City.

Laura loved the Christmas season, listening to Christmas Music, and spent time throughout the year preparing. A talented crafter, she enjoyed making ornaments and greeting cards, and crocheting. She was an avid reader, and particularly enjoyed horror and fantasy books, especially the work of Stephen King. A member of the American Kennel Association, she participated in dog judging events throughout the United States and Europe with her collies. Fond of furry pets, she also adored her cats, especially her orange males. Laura is remembered for her kind, thoughtful nature, and for being stubborn yet lovable.

Surviving are her children, Amanda (David) Miller and William Byers, both of Columbia City; grandchildren, Jordan (Austin) Arick, Andrea (Draven) McIntyre, Tracie (Alejandra Rodriguez) Miller, and Justin Miller; two great-grandchildren; and siblings, Michele (Ray) Kitson of Bear Lake, Sue (Greg) Wheeler of Columbia City, Nancy Burman of Columbia City, Doug (Mindy) Myers of Albion, and Jack (Carrie) Myers of Columbia City.

The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, (November 2nd), 2026 at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City, with burial at Christian Chapel Cemetery in Merriam. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until the service at the funeral home.

Memorials in Laura’s honor can be made to the Humane Society of Whitley County.
