Marie Charlene Breaux , 82, of Columbia City, passed away at Stillwater Hospice Home in Fort Wayne on Thursday, January 16, 2025.
Born on May 6, 1942, in Salt Lake City, Utah, she was the daughter of the late Mack C. and Pauline Marie (Wedler) Roberts. Her formative years were spent in Arizona, and in the late 1940s, she moved to Fort Wayne. In 1950, she was taken in by her aunt and uncle, Frank and Edna Gondek, who raised her. She graduated from Columbia City Joint High School in 1960.
After graduation, she joined the U.S. Woman's Army Corps (WAC) on June 8, 1960. Serving at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, she became a clerk typist. She was honorably discharged on October 19, 1961
On September 8, 1961, she married Harvey L. Breaux. They made their home in Houston, Texas, for 41 years, raising a son. They then moved to Marie's hometown of Columbia City. Harvey died on June 26, 2011.
While living in Houston, Marie worked as a data entry clerk for 40 years. She belonged to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Manvel, Texas.
After moving to Columbia City, she became a member of St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church and the Parkview Hospital Senior's Club and held the title of Queen at Whitley County Senior Center for 2018 & 2019. As a veteran, she was a participant in the Honor Flight of Northeast Indiana, taking the trip to Washington, D.C., on October 16, 2019.
Surviving is her son, Kenneth W. Breaux of Manvel, Texas; a half-brother, Brad Beard of Brandon, FL and half-sister Robie (Larry) Cline of Midland, GA; cousins, Thomas Gondek and James (Shelly) Kuempel; and her caretaker, Rita Hively of Columbia City.
Additionally, she was preceded in death by a stillborn daughter, Denise R. Breaux, and a cousin, Linda Geier.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, July 8, 2025 at St Paul of the Cross Catholic Church, Columbia City. Her cremains will be laid to rest at the Nolt Cemetery, Columbia City, with Military Honors. A small visitation will start at 12:30 p.m. at the church. Arrangements are in the care of Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.
