Obituary

Marvin Joseph Shopteese, 74, of Columbia City, died peacefully in the company of family at 7:47 a.m. on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at his home.

Born on July 22, 1952, in Amarillo, Texas, he was a son of the late Melford J. and Donna L. (Astrom) Shopteese. Growing up in Amarillo, Texas, he completed Amarillo Elementary School and attended Amarillo High School. He later earned a GED. He was a proud member of the Prairie Band of Potawatomi Nation.

He made his home in Denver, CO, raising five children. In 1991, he moved to Rifle, CO.

On February 7, 2001, he married Nancy Butcher. They made their home in Columbia City.

Marvin was self-employed for 40 years as a drywaller. After moving to the area, he joined the housekeeping department at Parkview Whitley Hospital in 2017, retiring in 2021.

A man of faith, he regularly read the Bible. He enjoyed fishing and watching old Cowboy movies. Family was always a priority, and he appreciated time spent with them. Fond of cats, he leaves behind his big male cat, Milo the Silo, and his female cat, Gracie.

Surviving is his wife, Nancy; children, Nikol Shopteese, Jessica (Travis) Chadwick both of Wichita Kansas, Kyle Lopez of Dodge City, Kansas, Krystal Shopteese and Zachariah Shopteese both of Denver, Colorado; step children, Kevin (Laura) Saggars, Teresa (Mitch) Hoffman and Christina (Dean) Griffith, all of Columbia City; 10 grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; 23 step-great-grandchildren; and sisters, Pam Shopteese of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Yvonne (Gary) Johnson of Duncan, Oklahoma, and Terri (Robert) Seaman of Choctaw, Oklahoma.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Gerri Shopteese.

As per Marvin’s wishes, there will be no services. Arrangements are in the care of Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.
