Michael A. Coats , 71, of rural South Whitley, died unexpectedly of natural causes at 9:08 p.m., Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at his home.
He was born on August 21, 1953, in Kankakee, Illinois, the only child of the late RC and Susanna (Maskal) Coats. Growing up in Rankin, IL, he graduated from Rankin High School in 1971. Continuing his education, he attended Danville Junior College for two years while working for a veterinarian. Transferring to the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science in 1975.
Michael married Debra L. Wach on July 14, 1979, in DeKalb, IL, beginning their 45-year journey together raising two children.
After graduating college, he went to work for DeKalb Swine Breeders in DeKalb, IL. In 1978, he took a transfer to a station in South Whitley, IN. In 1982, he went to work for Crow's Hybrid Seed Corn Company, where he worked in sales. In 1996, he went to work for LG Seeds Company, retiring in 2019. He completed his work career working part-time for Nutrien Ag Solutions in Warren, IN, retiring in September 2024.
Mike enjoyed country living, raising chickens, growing vegetables in the garden, and caring for many dogs and cats. He liked maintaining freshwater fish aquariums and watching Illini basketball. Active with his children, he was a coach for their various sports. He is remembered for his delicious Sunday morning pancakes. When the grandkids came along, they were his focus and joy.
He was a member of the Church of Christ, North Manchester. He taught Bible classes, song leader, and gave an occasional sermon. He was a member of the Big Brother/Little Brother program for several years.
An active and loving father, grandfather, and husband, he will be forever missed by his wife and family.
He is survived by his wife Debra; children, Jeffery (Ariel) Coats of Newburgh and Sarah L. Coats of South Whitley; grandchildren, Avery, Harper, and Lakyn.
Michael's wishes were to have no services. Arrangements are in the care of Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley.
