Obituary

Michael Lyle Duff, 76 , of Columbia City, passed away peacefully with his wife by his side at 2:50 p.m. Saturday, October 25, 2025, at The Waters of Huntington, following a long illness.

Born on December 18, 1948, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, he was a son of the late Robert and Kathleen (Banning) Duff.  Growing up in Fort Wayne, he graduated from Snider High School in 1967.  He continued his education in engineering studies at IPFW, Fort Wayne.

Joining the U.S. Air Force in 1969, he served with the Strategic Air Command in Vietnam and Korea and completed his service in Montana. He was honorably discharged in 1973.

On July 10, 1970, he married Susan Kay Burnau.  After his military service, the couple made their home in Fort Wayne, raising two children.

Mechanically inclined, Mike became president and co-owner of Hydro Systems, Inc. in Fort Wayne, manufacturing steel tanks for hydraulic systems.  After 30 years of service, he retired and moved to Columbia City.  To remain active, he took a part-time job at Menard's on Illinois Road in Fort Wayne.

Using his mechanical abilities at home, he liked to fabricate lamps from steel pipe fittings, valves, and other pieces.  Fond of his cats, he leaves behind Rodney, Ellie, and Maggie.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 55 years, Susan; children, Michael A. "Andy" (Shannon) Duff of Fort Wayne and Mindy (Jason) Hesting of Columbia City; grandchildren, Samantha Carroll, Brendan Duff, and Van Hambrick.

Additionally, he was preceded in death by a brother, Rober Duff, Jr.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.  Arrangements are in the care of Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.

Memorials in Michael's honor are to the Alzheimer's Association.
