Nancy Jean Nix, 61, of rural South Whitley, died in the company of family at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 15, 2023, at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City.

Born on August 3, 1961, in Columbia City, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Dwight Dloyd Deubner and Patricia Mae (King) Deubner. Growing up in South Whitley and Michigan, she graduated from Whitko High School in 1979.

On September 26, 1980, she married Matthew J. Nix. They have always made their home in the South Whitley area.

In addition to being a homemaker raising three children, she had worked for the Washington Twp. Elementary School as a teacher's aide. She then worked for the Peabody Retirement Community, North Manchester, and for the past eight years with Gas America – Speedway in Columbia City.

A private person, the family was always her priority, especially her granddaughter. Her work at the convenience store made her well-known to many in the community, who would often greet her when seen in public, despite her reserved nature. When out to eat with family and friends, it was always a good-spirited contest to see who could pay for the other's meal.

Surviving is her husband of 43 years, Matthew; children, Tera B. Nix of Wisconsin Rapids, WI, Timmothy J. Nix of South Whitley, and Tiffany R. Chapman-Lane of Rockville; four grandchildren, one great-grandchild; and brothers, Gene Deubner of Vandalia, MI, and Rick Deubner of South Whitley.

Nancy desired to have no services. A celebration of life will be held from 3 to 5 p.m., August 5, 2023 at Sugar Creek Fellowship Church of the Nazarene, 3581 W. 800 S., South Whitley. Arrangements are in the care of Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.
