Obituary

Philip Cleon Shriver, 99, formerly of South Whitley, died peacefully at 1:05 p.m. Saturday, May 29, 2021, at Waterford Crossing Healthcare Goshen, where he was a resident since September 2018.

He was born November 10, 1921, in Whitley County, Indiana, a son of the late Levi and Stella (Ogle) Shriver. He grew up in rural South Whitley and graduated from South Whitley High School.

On April 4, 1943, he married Leta Bernice Keel. They made their home on a farm in rural South Whitley. Leta died on June 26, 2005.

A career-long farmer, Phil had a large chicken and egg operation for years, maintaining over 5000 chickens. An advocate for the industry, he was instrumental in stopping an egg carton tax proposed by the State of Ohio. He also worked construction for Morris Darley of South Whitley for many years. Phil was an accomplished welder and metal fabricator, making several crosses that adorn the steeples of area churches.

In his senior years, he enjoyed woodworking. He carved figurines as well as making furniture pieces. After completing his daily chores, he often liked to visit with friends at the former car dealer shop of Pickle Norris in South Whitley.

He is survived by his nephew and caretaker, Randall (Donna) Reichard of Goshen, and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Additionally, he was preceded in death by brothers Ogle and Cletus Shriver and sisters Maxine Reichard and Vera Hyser.

A graveside service is 2 p.m. Tuesday at the South Whitley Cemetery, 7500 W State Road 14, South Whitley. Arrangements are by Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley.
