Born on June 23, 1925, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, he was the son of the late Enoch E. and Gladys M. (Heller) Carpenter. He began school in Fort Wayne. After the family moved to the Avilla area, he graduated from Avilla High School.

Richard was proud of his exemplary work career. After retiring, he and Juanita traveled throughout the States, with their favorite destination being the western states and Alaska. In his younger years, he liked to hunt deer and raccoons. He kept active throughout his life by maintaining an abundant supply of firewood that he used to heat his home.

A faithful member of the former Blue River Community Church, he also served 32 years on the Union Twp Volunteer Fire Department. In 1984, he was named an honorary member of the Department.

He is survived by two children, Karla M. Jordan of Denver, CO, and Rex (Diane) Carpenter of Columbia City; seven grandchildren, several great-grandchildren; and a brother, Donald Carpenter of Huntington.

Additionally, he was preceded in death by sons Ricky A. Carpenter and Ronald Carpenter; and brothers Glenn and Wayne Carpenter.
