Roger Lee Johnson Sr., 79, of Columbia City, passed away peacefully in the company of family on January 27, 2025.
Born on December 9, 1945, he was the son of the late Howard and Laverne (Bailey) King. Roger attended East Noble High School and began his career at Flint-Walling, later moving to Quik Tanks in Kendallville, and then to Dexter Axle in Albion.
On June 14, 1980, Roger married Connie Lou Wineland, and they made their home in Columbia City.
Roger loved doing anything that included spending time with his grandkids. He loved playing pool with his kids and friends. He enjoyed singing karaoke and playing cards with family and friends. He was a dedicated husband for over 44 years. An amazing father and "Papah"/grandpa. Roger was very likeable; he knew no stranger. If you knew him, you loved him. He would do anything for anyone.
He is survived by his loving wife, Connie; his children, Brian (Mari) Wineland, Tavi (Ryan Graves) Johnson, and Roger Lee Johnson Jr., all of Columbia City. Roger was a proud 'Papah' to eight grandchildren: Hailey, Cody, Savannah (Brian), Layla, Adaisyn, Brantlyne (Tavi), Ariyana, and Nevaeh (Jay), and a great-grandpa to five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Harold (Shirley) Johnson of Avilla, along with 40 nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews.
Roger was preceded in death by his four brothers, Jack, Wesley, Kenny, and Delbert, and four sisters, Betty, Lotty, Loretta, and Bea.
As per Roger's wishes, there will be no services. Arrangements are in the care of Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
