Samuel R. Torres , 94, of Columbia City. passed away at 12:15 a.m. on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at Parkview Regional Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Born on November 5, 1931, in Hondo, Texas, he was a son of the late Fructoso and Rita (Rosas) Torres. He grew up moving frequently because his family often relocated to work where crop harvesting was needed.

On April 17, 1985, he married Martina M. Witt. They made their home in Columbia City. Martina died on January 28, 2010.

Before retiring in 1994, Samuel dedicated 24 years to the Zollner Corporation (formerly the Zollner Piston Company) in Fort Wayne. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Columbia City.

Having a penchant for tinkering, Samuel enjoyed searching through others' discarded items for his next project or a part to complete his current one.  He collected aluminum cans around the area, crushing them in his garage for recycling. He was fond of dancing, loved Mexican food, which reminded him of his childhood, and dedicated time to being with childhood friends. He cared greatly for his son's German Shepherd, Luna, and his love for and commitment to his family were apparent to anyone who knew him.

Samuel is survived by his sons, Rojelio "Roger" (Kelly) Torres of Huntington, and Rene M. (Vickie) Torres of Columbia City; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by siblings, Fructoso Torres, Jose Torres, Candilaro Torres, Guadalupe Moran, Jesusita Ruiz, Daniel Torres, Baudelia Del Toro, and Natibdad Riojas.

As per his wishes, there will be no public ceremony. He will be interred beside his wife at the Christian Chapel Cemetery in Merriam.  Arrangements are in the care of Smith & Sons Funeral Home of Columbia City, IN.
