Obituary

Shirley Mae Kuhn , 100, of Columbia City, died peacefully at 12:50 p.m. Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at Millers at Oak Pointe.

She was born on September 8, 1923, in Gary, Indiana, a daughter of the late Albert E. and Martha (Laderer) Kuhn.  Growing up in the Gary area, she graduated from Tolleston High School in 1941.

Shirley started her career as a dental technician for ten years. Then, she worked for the American Bridge Division of U.S. Steel in Gary. She retired with 29 years of service as a shop accountant. To keep busy, she worked in food service at Merrillville High School.

In 2006, she moved to Columbia City and became a member of Grace Lutheran Church and the Deborah Group. A regular at the Senior Center, she liked playing euchre.

Surviving is her sister, Joan Johnston of Columbia City; nephew, John Stockwell of Columbia City; and nieces, Kathy (Terry) Daege of South Dakota, Susan (Timothy) Gambrell of Columbia City, and Mary (Theresa) Kuhn of Round Lake, IL; and many great nieces and nephews.

Additionally, Shirley was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Kuhn.

The funeral service is 5 p.m. Sunday (Aug 18th) at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with visitation from 2 p.m. until the service Sunday at the funeral home. She will be buried in South Park Cemetery at a later date.

Memorials in Shirley's honor are to the League for the Blind in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
