Steven Thomas Kerl, 67, of rural Columbia City, passed away at 5:22 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at his home.

Born on December 20, 1958, in Janesville, Wisconsin, he was the son of Judith A. (Haugen) Kerl Mislivecek and the late Thomas A. Kerl. Growing up in Janesville, he graduated from Parker High School in 1977.

Steven began his career with General Motors in Janesville, Wisconsin, before transferring to the Fort Wayne Assembly Plant and relocating to rural Columbia City in 1986. He retired after 43 years of dedicated service with General Motors, primarily working in the paint shop.

Steven was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved spending time on the lake beside his home. He traveled across several states pursuing his favorite outdoor activities, from deer hunting in Hayward, Wisconsin, to fishing for walleye on Lake Erie. His appreciation for nature also extended to gardening and maintaining his property. Steven was also a longtime motorsports enthusiast who enjoyed NASCAR, drag racing, and truck pulls.

He was a devoted father and grandfather who cherished time spent with his family. Steven especially looked forward to family trips to Maine, where he enjoyed the breathtaking coastal scenery and fresh seafood. An excellent cook, he took great pride in preparing meals for family and friends, creating memories that will be treasured for years to come.

Steven is survived by his daughter, Kara (Travis) Preston of Columbia City; his grandchildren, Braylon and Kailyn Preston; his mother, Judith A. Mislivecek; his sister, Jan Kerl of Janesville, Wisconsin; his sister-in-law, Sandra Kerl of Janesville, Wisconsin; and his nephews, Joshua (Lexi) Kerl, Dan (Ashlee) Kerl, and Andrew Kerl, all of Janesville, Wisconsin.

He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas A. Kerl; his brother, Kevin Kerl, who passed away in 2015; his step-father, Melvin Mislivecek, who passed away in 2021, and his grandparents.

In accordance with his wishes, a small private viewing will be held for family members. Arrangements are in the care of Smith & Sons Funeral Home in Columbia City.

Memorial contributions may be made in Steven's memory to Riley Children's Foundation.

Steven will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his love of the outdoors, his passion for cooking, and most importantly, his devotion to his family. He will be deeply missed by his family, neighbors, and friends. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
