Thomas O. Macy, 90, formerly of rural Columbia City, died peacefully at 7:45 a.m. Monday, August 21, 2023, at Cumberland Trace, Plainfield, Indiana, where he has been a resident since April of 2022.
Born on March 12, 1933, in Wayne County, Indiana, the son of the late Oscar M. and Mary J. (Hamilton) Macy. As a young boy, the family moved to Fort Wayne for two years, then moved to a farm in Noble County. Thomas graduated from Wolf Lake High School.
Tom was inducted into the United States Army May 21, 1953. He was a supply sergeant in Fort Benning, Georgia and completed his course as a Unit Supply Specialist. He transferred to the Army Reserve on May 20, 1955.
On June 20, 1954, he married Viola Mae Burns. They made their home in Loon Lake for three years before moving to their home in Thorncreek Township. Recently they moved to Plainfield, Indiana to be close to their son.
For over 19 years, he worked at Navistar, Fort Wayne and in September 1985 began working for the Indiana Department of Transportation as a special markings foreman. He retired in 2010.
Thomas enjoyed family, eating out, working outside, gardening and tinkering in his garage.
He was a member of Big Lake Church of God.
Surviving is his wife, Viola Mae; son, Kevin D. (Julie) Macy of Plainfield; grandchildren, Dawn Macy, Adam Macy, Brenden Macy, Karlee Macy and Carissa Macy; great grandchildren, Quintin Macy, Braiden Macy, Maddie Macy, Makayla Thomas, BruceLee Oliver, Jet Oliver, Parker Macy and Holland Macy; and a sister, Melanie R. Ramey of Ash Grove, Missouri.
Additionally, he was preceded in death by a son, Mark E Macy; sister Vera Gaff; and a brother, Charles E. Macy.
The funeral service is 2 p.m. Friday, August 25, 2023 at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. Burial is at the Keister Cemetery. Visitation is from 12 Noon until the service Friday at the funeral home.
