Walter "Jack" Nelson Sevier, 96, of Columbia City, passed away at 5:20 p.m. on Monday, May 18, 2026, at Parkview Whitley Hospital.

He was born on August 21, 1929, in Sullivan, Indiana, the second child to Hubert E. and Virginia B. (Howe) Sevier. Growing up in Sullivan, he attended Sullivan High School, where he lettered in football, basketball, and baseball, graduating in 1947.  He continued his education at Indiana State Teacher College in Terre Haute.  Leaving college, he joined the Public Service Company of Indiana, where he worked until he enlisted in the U.S. Army on March 30, 1951.  After basic training, he was sent to Korea during the Korean War.  Attaining the rank of Sergeant First Class, he was discharged on March 3, 1954.  Returning to Indiana State Teachers College, he earned a bachelor's degree.

After college, he spent three years teaching in California, before moving to Fort Wayne and began teaching at Northwood Middle School, where he met his future wife and fellow teacher, Linda K. Murbach.  The two were wed on June 19, 1966.  They made a home in Columbia City, raising two children.  Continuing his teaching career, he earned a Master of Education from Indiana University in Fort Wayne.  He retired after 29 years with the Fort Wayne Community Schools.  Jack was an active member of the Columbia City United Methodist Church, serving on several of their ministries.

He was a car enthusiast and collector; he maintained a large collection, including a 1957 Bel Air, a 1948 DeSoto, a 1963 Impala, and a 1977 Corvette.  He also collected automotive memorabilia.  Jack enjoyed golf, both playing and watching. He was known for taking walks around town in all weather with his beloved wife, Linda.

Jack is survived by his wife of 59 years, Linda, their two children, Jacquelyn (Kurt) Magnus of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, Canada, and Paul (Cherise) Sevier of Fort Wayne; and three grandchildren, Jonas Magnus, Izabel Rhoades, and Charlotte Rhoades.

He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Norma Jean Ravis.

Jack desired to have no services. Arrangements are in the care of Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.
