Obituary

Wilma Carroll Watson, 89, of rural Columbia City, died peacefully at her home at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday, May 29, 2022.

She was born on July 31, 1932, in Larwill, Indiana, a daughter of the late Edward and Bertha Mae (Watson) Holycross.  Growing up in the Larwill area, she graduated from Larwill High School in 1950.  A star athlete, she was recruited by the Fort Wayne Women's Professional Softball team as a pitcher.

On November 17, 1951 she married Robert Lee Watson.  The couple made their home on a dairy farm in Etna-Troy Twp.  Robert died on September 23, 2014.

In addition to assisting her husband on the farm, she milked cows twice daily until 2009.  Between milking's, she raised a son, maintained the household, tended the garden, and grew flowers to adorn the house.  She was a proud member of the Dairy Farmers of America (DFA).

Surviving is her son, Michael L. (Esther) Watson of Columbia City; a grandson Zachary M. Watson of Columbia City; and a sister, Miriam Louise Walter of Columbia City.

Additionally, she was preceded in death by two granddaughters Jennifer Elaine Watson and Carra Lee Watson who tragically lost their life in a house fire.

Wilma's wishes were to have no funeral service.  Arrangements are in the care of Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.

Memorials in Wilma's honor are to DFA Cares Foundation.
